Unusual Detections

No one moved. They only stared at the dark grey metal doors and then—cautiously they began to open. Pulling down a lever, the head sheild attendant turned on the hover-craft. A soft humming noise mingled in with the whirr of the opening door. The moment there was enough clearance, the sheild generator shot out a hot pink beam that bent outward in a wide energy sheild. With a shout, the captain then ordered for the hover-craft which was carrying the sheild generator to proceed forward. As they did so, the shield kept bending towards the helicopter netting everyone in a protective cover. Half a dozen men carefully manipulated various lift and steering controls in a strategic balancing act to navigate the hover craft over the ashen logs to the edge of the damage. All this happened while a couple of those men laid a watchful eye on various graphs tracking surrounding waves that would affect the shield.

“Okay! Let’s move it!” the Brazilian captain shouted in Portuguese.

Everyone else emptied out of the helicopter and spread out looking for any helpful evidence. James hung back with the US captain.

“So where were you during the event?” the captain.

“Over there by that log at the edge,” James pointed and moving his finger, “The camp would’ve been right there.”

“I see. Well, let’s go take a look.”

The two wandered over and began searching the ground. It wasn’t long before one of the nearby soldiers shouted and beckoned them over. Swiftly, they came over to see.

“What have we got?” the captain asked.

The soldier then pointed to some tracks. They appeared to be somewhat cat like but much much larger. Next to the tracks, a log had a huge scratch. By this time, the biologists had come over as well.

“What in the world!” one exclaimed.

“It appears Dr. O’Connell was right after all. This isn’t any cat track I’ve ever seen.”

“Let’s get some shots taken and the investigation underway then,” the captain ordered.
As the biologists analyzed everything, the rest of the soldiers followed the direction of the tracks. Everything was moving along as he had hoped. Watching everyone, the captain took in a satisfied breath, but he was quickly interrupted by one of the sheild operators. “Umm, sir. You need to see this.”

The two marched briskly over the dusty ash to where the shield generator was stationed. Confusement and concern was definitely in the operators’ eyes as they anxiously waited. Before they had even finished stepping up onto the hover-craft, the lead shield operator began explaining rapidly, “I have no idea what is happening, sir, but when I moved forward just pass a certain point, the readings did this.”

He panned over to reading’s history on the screen. Giving a look, the captain almost instantly exclaimed, “What in the world is that?”
